With plenty of zombie games hitting the portals these days we though we would do a piece on mobile apps instead, as there are a few early risers in the markets that are very playable and full of enjoyment. These four apps can be played on both android and ios devices. So here they are, let us know what you think!

Zombie Farm: This one towers above Plants vs. Zombies in every way

Some clever bugar went and used the fondness for plants and zombies created by PopCap, combined it with every casual gamer’s love of sim games and created a fantastic mobile game known as Zombie Farm – it’s a classic cross between the above mentioned and the sim’s. In Zombie Farm you set up your own customised farm and grow all sorts of different zombies to amass a small army.

This game is also social so you can play and interact with your friends in the game.

What we love most about this one is the ability to experiment when combining different plants and zombies together to grow one of a kind zombie species, it makes the game so much more exciting than just picking from the run of the mill preset species created by the game developers. This is certainly one game that doesn’t follow the usual agenda when it comes to creating zombie entertainment for all the family!

Zombie Farm @ iTunes | Zombie Farm @ Google Play.

iGun Zombie – It’s time for some real carnage…

As if this game isn’t just the most awesome first person zombie shooter available across all mobile phones. Lock and load then prepare to blast your way through hordes of ugly zombies in iGun Zombie. If you have ever wanted to perform a real massacre on these walking undead creatures on your way to work well now’s your chance. Just pick your phone up and let this game suck you into an intense world where zombies never stop jumping at you and blood gushes against your screen.

The 3d graphics, realistic sound effects and immersive game play aren’t the only things going for this game, the upgradable, kick arse guns make iGun Zombie all that much more sweeter. Feel the instant satisfaction of finding a powerful gun that blasts the rotten hell out of these ugly fiends, the sorts of weapons that will drive your urge forwards on a continuous and endless bloody assault, until every last one of each round’s zombies is left in lumps of flesh mangled all over the scene. Start killing zombies now, download the game below…

iGun Zombie @ iTunes | iGun Zombie @ Google Play.

Zombie Runaway – Help those wretched humans are after me

Run zombie, run zombie, run run run, cos here comes those humans with their guns, guns, guns.

Take control of the last zombie on earth and avoid the extinction of an entire species by evading those wretched humans who are out to wipe your sorry behind off the face of the earth.

It’s one of those fight or flight situations in Zombie Runaway and fortunately enough this zombie has half a brain and decides that flight is the better option. It’s your job to make sure that your zombie doesn’t get massacred by those hungry humans in a game that turns the idea of zombies vs humans on its head. So many games feature the wrath of the human against the armies of zombies but now your the minority – as in the last zombie on earth!

The controls are simple, so is the aim but the gameplay is rich, the graphics attractive and the lure of just one more run very addictive. Get your running shoes on and go save that poor little zombie from a brutal death now in Zombie Runaway.

Zombie Runaway @ iTunes | Zombie Runaway @ Google Play.

Zombie Booth – You’ve Never Looked So Disgusting!

Warning!…Only get this app if you don’t mind having your appearance uglified x 10. Certainly don’t show it to your children, otherwise I think next time they see you they may not look at you like your their nice mummy or daddy ever again!

Well enough rambling without telling you what this neat app exactly does, it converts your face into a life like scary zombie that’s a tad interactive. Your new found menacing look will make flesh hungry noises and if you put your finger too close to it, well I’ll let you find out…It’s a notch up on booth apps such as fat booth and all the other face distorting one’s. If you really wanted to make that vain annoying somebody in your life a little more gruesome this is definately the game for you and will prove a welcomed sobering lesson for them.

Now that you have a good grasp on what to do on a day to day basis (which is basically balancing how you use your people and figuring out which blocks to expand to), it is time to think about the big picture, or more importantly, your end game. Rebuild offers a total of 4 endings .

Establish a New Government

Somewhere in the city is a city hall – one you can occupy and use in order to establish a brand new government. This may seem a little odd, since zombies never follow the law, but by establishing a government, you are taking the first steps into rebuilding human society as whole. To do this, you must first occupy a total of 30 city blocks or structures during your game, then seek out the city (or transform one of your existing buildings into the city hall). After this, you must have up to 10 different characters with the leadership skill who will write and ratify a constitution for the new government.

Escape Through a Helicopter

While exploring the city, you will come across a helicopter pad. Sadly, just as you are about to obtain it, the helicopter will explode as the result of a sabotage. This is one of the longer endings to pursue if you do not know the details. First you must choose to trade for the helicopter parts when the trader offers it (he offers the heli parts or a cure, you must choose the heli parts. Second, one of your people will given the choice to read a helicopter manual. Lastly, you must get your scientists to research electricity –which is important for repairing the helicopter (it also boosts overall happiness as well). Once you have all of that, the option to fix the helicopter will be open and you can begin the repairs.

Defeat the Last Judgement Gang

Aside from the giant zombie horde outside of town, you are constantly harassed and raided by members of the Last Judgement Gang –which according to the game narrative, seems to a bunch of ex-priests turned outlaw bikers. In order to beat them, you must research he radio technology to receive a signal from a Last Judgement slave seeking help. Take on the mission and it will open up another mission, one with an escapee who wants to enter the city. Take her in and she will tell you about the location of the gang’s hideout. Now seek out the subway, reclaim it and choose to fortify bother entrances. From there, you will be told that the path to the gang’s hideout has been found. Taking them on will take 10 while days so be sure to send in your best soldiers into the fray.

Finding the Cure

Once you acquire a laboratory, you will gain access to a special event that will allow you to find the cure for the zombie plague. This starts with a message alerting you that a strange man claiming to be a doctor wants to get into town. It may sound suspicious, but you should let him in. Once inside, the turns out to be a mad Russian scientist and he locks himself up in the laboratory (you will need a second lab for your people to use). His research takes plenty of time, but eventually, he will ask to have the help of an assistant as well as ask you to gather samples from an invading zombie horde. Eventually, a massive explosion will rock the laboratory and you will find that the mad scientist has fallen victim to his own research. You will have to reclaim the laboratory and then assign your scientists to continue the research being done, depending on your scientist’s skills, the amount of time this takes will vary from 20 days to only 10.

Now that you have a comprehensive guide to game, start rebuilding your city in – Rebuild 2 and see if you can manage to achieve all four goals of the classic sim zombie game.

Aside from knowing what you people can and can’t do, it also pays knowing the four basic tasks that any character can do for non-territory areas. These will determine what a player will do for the duration of a day (or longer, depending on the mission), and will heavily affect how fast you progress in the game.

“Scouting” lets you know the basic information of a location, some areas are already pre-scouted, allowing you to check if a location has survivors or salvageable loot, and the amount of zombies infesting it. If an area has not been scouted, sending people there could be dangerous as there is no way to tell if you are sending enough troops or if you are wasting (and risking) manpower and time. In general, scouting is a safe task, which means that whoever you send will definitely come back alive. Once you get into the business of expanding your territory (which should happen early on), it is important that you spend time scouting new locations as soon as you can.

“Scavenging” lets you send people in with a single task in mind: look for anything of value and bring it back to camp. At the very least, your scavengers will be able to bring back a few rations worth of food. On a really good run, they can come back with useful tools, or even new weapons.

“Recuit Survivors” is a matter of talking to the random humans still living outside of the camp and getting them to join the group. Some survivors will readily join you, other will take a little bit of convincing. This is where leaders come in, their high charisma and ability to communicate will help convince these stubborn survivors that they have got a better chance inside your walls.

“Kill Zombies” this should be the first task you do after you send in a scout. Regardless of the volume and number of the zombies infesting a location, investing a short amount of time for soldiers to clear a path for your leaders and scavengers helps ensure the safe return of your people. After all, less casualties means better chances of survival.

“Reclaim Land”, this is the coup-de-grace of missions to blocks outside your territory; sending in your builders to fortify and include the new building in your occupied area allows you to increase the overall defensive strength of the city. This also allows you to gain access to schools, churches, apartments, laboratories, malls and other structural resources that are others difficulty to obtain without a high level builder and plenty of land to transform.

Rebuild 2 along with many other undead strategy games require patience and practice to succeed and with the strategy guides found at our site we hope your game playing experience will be made that bit more rewarding, enjoy!

There are several character jobs available in Rebuild 2, and getting high stats in any of them is a key part of having a successful run of the game. Stats can be increased by having characters perform the appropriate tasks –as long as they are led by a character with the needed knowhow.

Leadership – characters with this trait are marked with a blue flag (by default, your character will have this trait). Leaders have the ability to inspire and organize people, this means that they are perfect for recruiting new members to join the group and they would do well preaching in a church or bartending as they can easily uplift the morale of everyone in town (at a high enough level, a leader can raise the morale of the city by one point each day).

Soldiers – these are the fighters of the group, characters with this ability have a bull’s eye icon on their status. With their proficiency in the use of firearms, soldiers are the key elements to successfully removing zombies from new locations and in fending off attacks from both hordes and gangs.

Builders – are equipped with the knowhow when it comes to buildings and structures, this means that if you want to expand your borders, you will need their help. Characters with the builder skill have a hammer and screwdriver icon on their status and will be able to fortify buildings, change the purpose of certain structures and most importantly, reclaim blocks to expand your active territory. Having builders early on helps a lot, since they can provide you with schools, farms or any other utility structure early on.

Scavengers – these are the characters who are able to seek out and obtain important items such as food, weapons and other materials from locations outside of your territory. Scavenging nearby locations is a hit or miss thing –sending in highly skilled scavengers does not necessarily equate getting good loot, but with zombies running at you from every angle, every little bit helps. Also, characters with the scavenger skill are also well suited for running farms in order to ensure that there is a steady flow of food for the city.

Scientists – marked by a green flask icon in their status bar, these characters are your ticket to getting upgrades for the farm, defense, recruitment and even a chance at finding a cure for the zombie plague. While their only purpose is to do research in a laboratory, the rewards for the time and effort needed to finish their studies are truly worth it. Of course, it goes without saying that focus on the use of scientists should only be pursued mid-game and onwards (unless you are really lucky to have recruited a high level scientist and easily acquire a laboratory).

In Rebuild 2 by NorthWay Games, players are faced with a massive challenge: lead a small, yet struggling group of human survivors in order to take back their city and win against the zombie horde. The game has been so well liked that even the last stand 4 has been modelled on it’s ideas.

As one would expect, you get to play the events of this epic struggle from the bottom up: you start out with a measly four blocks, and a handful of people. But as the game progresses, you will work your way through the city, taking back one city block at a time, and all the while bringing more survivors to your side and scavenging for more weapons, food and other important resources.

Yes, Rebuild 2 plays very much like the original Rebuild game, but it has also been improved to include new ending scenarios, a player equipment system and the ability to change the names of many particulars: such as the name of your character, the NPCs and even the city itself. Other elements of the original game still remain: the need for specific jobs to perform specific tasks, having a time duration for completing missions and of course, having to deal with the occasional (and sometimes often) horde invasions.

How It All Works

The game is played by determining what you want your people to do at certain locations. This involves clicking on specific blocks and then selecting the course of action you want to take and who among your group will be assigned to the task. Occasionally, players are presented with certain yes-no choices wherein they will choose an appropriate course of action with non-resident NPCs (such as whether you would want to accept a wandering survivor, or if you are willing to trade a firearm for some food).

Knowing which survivors are fit for certain tasks is a key component of the game. And this means that you should get to know the various types of player job classes. Any single character can be proficient in all specializations, but they will always have their top three stats highlighted on their name bar. Once a character is assigned to a task, he or she will stay in that location to fulfill the task and will only stop once the mission is completed, the character is slain or injured, or if the player chooses to cancel the quest (there are also times when a sudden zombie ambush will force characters to run back to base and abandon their quest).

You can play Rebuild 2 at Newgrounds, JayisGames, Kongregate, Armor Games and Silver Games.

If you have been a long time undead-hunting, zombie-slaying fan, then it would not take much to expect that the nearly mythical Union City of Last Stand 1 and 2 is not as safe as it seems. Despite the fact that players desperately fight off waves of zombies night after night in a slow but steady race to reach safe haven, we all know how the basic formula goes: that so-called no zombies zone is bound to be infested with the infected. Last Stand 3: Union City delivers just that, and so much more. Complete with an all new gameplay that shakes the very core of the Last Stand series, Union City takes players to a whole new level of fear and as they fight their way through the streets littered with the undead.

Union City could very well be a completely new game. Gone is the old fight during the night, scavenge during the day system –zombies are now out on the street any time of the day. Also, you no longer have a base to defend, you must venture forth, armed with whatever weapons you may find, and keep moving forwards towards you goal. There is a very solid feel of role playing to this zombie game as you are now able to converse with NPCs, take one quests, learn more about the people who survived and were lost in the zombie attacks. There is also a new leveling and inventory system that has been put into play providing us all with a brand new game to play.

How it All Starts

Developer Con Artist has had plenty of time to reinvent the nature of the Last Stand series and they start it off by showcasing some mad flash animation skills. The opening of the game features some splendid animation detailing how your character first encounters the zombie horde in your way into Union City. The visual quality of the sequence is truly a step beyond Con Artist’s previous works. The only sad thing here is that the game could have used more of these amazing narrative events (the intro is the only part with such quality animation). If there were, this game would have had a truly dramatic feel.

As you may have been wondering, your character is not heading into Union City to escape the zombies, in fact, it is where you first encounter them. Distracted by the loss of signal on your smart phone, your character accidentally runs over something, causing your car to crash. As you come out, you realize that the body is not entirely human, and that the streets are now filled with other crashed vehicles and the wandering undead. Oh, and the main reason you are driving into the metro is: you are supposed to be on the way back home.

Fighting Your Way Through

The fact that “home” is currently being overrun by zombies is certainly not a good thing, but fortunately, it seems that your character is capable of using virtually any weapon you can get your hands on.

The game takes on a bit of a RPG-like approach as it allows players to allocate stats and skill points in order to customize their character’s abilities as they need. There are skills for using weapons, increasing HP and even some that help you scavenge more efficiently. Choosing which stats to raise basically means tweaking the character to the type of gameplay you want. Our personalized suggestion would be to invest a bit in melee and scavenging early on, since the early guns have really bad accuracy and it will waste the limited ammunition you can find at the start. As the game progresses and you earn more levels, it is much easier to switch to long range weaponry by investing points in the right skills.

So what are you supposed do with a whole lot of weapons? Well, the first thing you need is to find your spouse –and the best place to do that is back at your own house. If you choose a female character, then your spouse will be your husband. Choosing a guy means you will need to seek out your wife. The appearance of the spouse is influenced slightly by your character appearance, however their first names cannot be changed –wives will be named Bethany while husbands will named Matthew. Of course, their last name will be the same as yours.

Not Quite Alone

Finding your spouse, successfully surviving the zombie horde and successfully making it out of the city is no easy task. There is plenty of challenges that stand in your way and a lot of clever surprises for you to explore. Friendly NPCs are present in many locations –some inside designated safe houses while others are trying to survive zombie infested zones. Some of them will give you quests that you can undertake and some will even choose to accompany you as a companion.

The G button will serve as the primary companion interaction button –allowing you to help them up if they fall down or to just switch weapons with them. We found that giving NPCs a good rifle or shotgun can do wonders –they often have decent accuracy and when you are fighting off larger groups, they can really help. Just do not expect your NPC friends to lift a finger when fighting lone zombies, you still have to do most of the work.

More Role Playing and a Lot More Action

If you have not tried playing RPGs before, then we heavily suggest trying this title out. Many folks find it hard to connect text-heavy RPGs with fast paced action titles, but there are actually a lot of great console titles out there that do just that. Last Stand 3: Union City provides just that –all in a nifty Flash game that you can easily play anytime.

lowlevel.jpg

The leveling system is pretty simple: kill a zombie or finish a quest and you will gain experience points. Gain enough and you will level up. For every level that a player gains, they will earn skill points and an attribute point to add to their existing stats –doing so makes your character stronger and more efficient to use –not to mention being able to handle the undead a lot more easily.

The game’s randomly spawning Zombies also help players out when they need to farm experience points –and the best place to do so is near safe houses. Simply go out on the streets and explore nearby buildings to get some exp. Once your health runs low, head back to the safe house and get some sleep. So far, we have not found any penalties that can be incurred if a player spends too much time before finishing the game –but considering that Last Stand 2 had a time issue that players need to think about, we suggest farming only in areas where the experience earned per enemy kill becomes more substantial.

In terms of scavenging, it is advisable to the broken pipe and the paper weight junk items that are found until the crafter NPC is met –completing his requests earn exp, and despite the fact that the equipment he offers is not that good, the exp rewarded is always a welcome treat. With that said, once you no longer need his services, it is best to trash all junk items as they will no longer be needed (though you might want to get the junk-collection related achievement first).

Also, the game features a special survival mode –where you not only have to worry about your health and ammo, but you will also need to keep track of your stamina and hunger. Fatigue will fall on players who do not sleep and hunger will keep you needing to find various types of food. The sense of realism certain adds more danger to the game, but it is also a very exciting mode to play.

Zombies are Everywhere

And by everywhere, we also mean in pop culture. The Last Stand 3 truly knows its roots and if you take the time to find some of the wall scribbles in the game, you will learn more about the people who lived in Union City and what has happened to them during the infestation. This is made more interesting if you have had experience with major zombie films (such as those made by Romero) or has had the chance to play other iconic zombie-hunting games.

What we think in the end…

If you have need a zombie-headshot-killing fix, this game will give you that and so much more. Stepping away from the simplistic style of the first two Last Stand titles, Union City shows that the developers at Con Artist can deliver so much more. Superior graphics, a great soundtrack, great story delivery and a gameplay that makes you want to keep improving your character all blends together in this 2D side scrolling survival-action-RPG. While we wish that the game had more cutscenes and a better ending, it does not take away from the fact that from the beginning of the game until the end, Last Stand 3: Union City is truly one of the best zombie games out there. We give this game a bitten survivor’s 5 star rating.

How To Properly Wipe Out Humanity: Pandemic 2

This disease simulation game, Pandemic 2 provides a veritable host of challenges for players to overcome –governments closing down borders, transports and schools, the use of gas masks, the burning of bodies, airports shutting down; all of these done in the effort of stopping your disease in its tracks. So what is a disease engineer to do? Fight back of course, and this is how to do it.

For the most part, this guide is all about killing the entirety of the human race. While you may not share the same end goal, you can still use this guide as a way to determine the best course of action in various scenarios.

In Case You did not Know

Pandemic 2 is a game about creating your own disease and watching it spread across human civilization. You may just be curious about what happens (how many people notice the sickness, what steps are taken to stop it), but the real goal of the game is to provide players with a playing ground where the final objective is to completely wipe out all of humanity, with your disease as the killer.

Spreading a disease sounds simple enough, but there are several considerations –particularly, how to get it to small, isolated countries. This means that players have to consider the presence of ships and planes as options for getting their diseases to other countries (and in some cases, this is the only way to do that). Aside from that, players have to plan how noticeable the disease is –governments will not work against something they do not know exists.

Starting Out

You start the game by naming your disease and deciding its basic form: virus, bacteria or parasite. Each variant has its own set of possible symptoms and traits. They differ in infection effectiveness, speed of evolution and how durable they are against nature and medicine. Once you have made a choice, the game automatically assigns you to a random country –now this is where a few restarts is recommended. The idea here is to get a starting country that is isolated; better start in a country that is hard to get into, than play a game wondering if your disease will make it in there. While this does not ensure complete world annihilation, this certainly helps a whole lot. With that said, Madagascar is one the best places to start out in.

Controlling the Disease

Balancing infection spread with visibility is something that players will have to juggle with –after all, you want to get that disease out in the world as soon as you can. But at the same time, it works to your advantage if nobody notices it spreading. Early in the game, symptoms such as sneezing and coughing will make the disease noticeable, so better use them just enough to boost up the initial infected countries (get up to two or three countries infected) before completely removing the symptoms (remove any other symptom at the start of the game). This allows you to get a good lead in time and also, keep the governments in the dark about your disease.

At this point it becomes a waiting and praying game –basically waiting for the disease to spread on its own to other countries, and praying that your country finally gets to send off a planeload of infected that will land on the other isolated countries that have been lucky enough to have avoided to infection so far.

The Basic Strategy

As we mentioned, stick to sneezing as a symptom at the start of the game (or coughing depending on your disease type), and remove all the other symptoms (this might take a day or two as you wait to gain more evolution points. This will help spread the disease in your country fast and hopefully, get it to other countries as well. Once you have two to three infected countries in your list (check the world stats page), sell off the sneezing as well. This turns your disease into the lowest possible state of visibility. Governments are not completely oblivious to it, but you can at least avoid any major actions being taken.

The disease will then slowly spread throughout the world, and all you need to do is to keep patient. Do not buy the transmission upgrades –this will cause countries to quickly go through border, airport and port closings faster, and you want to keep those open for as long as possible. At least, as long as it takes for the disease to infect every country –this takes both skill in management and also plenty of luck as well, since the transportation options are pretty much random per game.

Killing the Infected

If you are lucky enough, then your disease would have successfully spread to all countries, and now it is time to play hardball. Gone is the notion if keeping your disease on the down-low. People are infected and everyone knows it, your disease can now take a more cruel form. Depending on your available evolution points (which should be quite plenty, if you followed the guide and did not use any), you can unlock third or even fourth tier symptoms. Most of the third tier symptoms are enough to cause fatalities, but you can go a little overboard and use the fourth tier types as well (most are pretty much fatal). This will then cause the deaths meter to rise and countries start moving from being infected to being completely forsaken. There is not much strategy here –in fact, if you infect all countries, you have pretty much won the whole game already.

The game has a special ending if you manage to wipe out humanity by the end of day 80 in realistic mode. This means having to really get into Madagascar before day 30 (it will automatically close all entryways by then). We will not be spoiling it for anyone, but it does involve something about the undead.

Rebuild is a zombie flavored strategy game. It is not real time strategy. You have to take decisions and then end the day to see what the outcome was like.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the undead have taken over. There’s a shortage of food and almost everything else. The only things in abundance are the zombies.

Objectives:

You will be placed in a zombie-infested city inside a small, fortified area. You will have some resources at your disposal to start with. The basic task is to defend your fort against the zombies and prevent them from breaching your walls. The main objective is to reclaim the city from the zombies. You will have to perform multiple activities to accomplish this. However, there’s more than one way to win the game.

You can win the game by either — setting up a government, finding a cure for the zombies or completely taking the city over. Once you achieve any one of these, you will be taken to a cut scene. You will get to see you score and decide whether you want to continue or not.

Buildings:

There are 8 basic types of buildings/squares — defensive/fortified areas, housing, farmland, hospital, bar, church, school and laboratory.

Defensive areas are the places where you can assign units for guard duty.

Housing will give you space to put up your survivors. Without space you cannot add more survivors.

Farms will continue to produce food for you, so that you don’t have to scavenge.

Hospitals cure diseases and treat the wounded. Without them, you will lose more units.

Bars keep the crowd happy. You can throw parties there to increase your happiness ratings. Lower happiness ratings will cause problems like crime, riots, strikes, etc. Bars will add some happiness points when you first add them.

Churches are also happiness enhancing buildings. You can throw parties here as well. Churches also add some happiness points when they are first added to the fort.

Schools are places where any unit can go and change their specialization. It is also the place where you send basic survivors to learn a skill.

Laboratories are where you will research upgrades for your community. They include upgrades for better food supplies, better ways to defend against the undead and upgrades in technology like radio and electricity. They are crucial for succeeding in the game.

Unlike other strategy games, you won’t have empty spaces to build what you like. You can only use the buildings that are already there. However, you can repurpose them in to something else. For example, your survivors have no use for a convenience store. So you can turn it in to a bar or a place to stay instead.

There’s also one special building in each city — the city hall. Once you have reclaimed this, you can set you leaders to work on drafting a constitution for a new government. Finishing this is one of the ways to win the game.

Units:

This game has six types of units — Leaders, Scavengers, Soldiers, Scientists, Builders and Survivors.

Technically every unit is called a survivor. However, basic units that have no skills will be referred to as survivors here.

Leaders are political and good at convincing people to join the cause. They also perform activities like throwing parties to increase happiness. Multiple leaders together can draft a constitution. This constitution will then become the basis of a new government and win the game for you.

Scavengers are good at gathering food. Initially they are important to have because you won’t have a large number of farms to give you a steady supply.

Soldiers are good at killing zombies. You will need them throughout the game for cleaning out buildings, escorting other units and defending the fort.

Scientists are crucial to the game. Their research will help you kill more zombies, preserve and produce more food and get technology like radio and electricity working again. Ultimately they can find a cure for ‘zombeism’ and help you win the game.

Builders are used to reclaim buildings to add to your fort. They are also used to repurpose buildings in to more useful structures. Having more of them will speed up the whole rebuilding process.

Survivors are fresh recruits who don’t have any skills. They can be trained at schools to learn any of the available skills. Thankfully, fresh recruits might already have some skill and contribute more actively to your community.

Unlike other strategy games, you cannot produce units. You have some units to start with. The rest you have to find along the way.

Activities:

When you find a new building, you will have several options to choose from. As you start the game, you will only have a few buildings inside your fort. You will know the details of some of the buildings around your fort. But the rest will be shrouded in darkness and you will have to scout to find out what’s out there. So for an unknown building you will have to start by scouting. Then you will known the status of 3 things — how many survivors are there if any, if there’s food in there and how many zombies are there.

Next you have 3 options depending on the results — you can recruit survivors if there are any; scavenge for food if there’s any and kill zombies to clear the way for reclamation. Once you have killed all the zombies in the building, it will be yours for reclaiming.

Any task can be performed by anyone. However, specialized units are more effective. You can send anyone to scout, but it is safer to send soldiers. Leaders are necessary for converting survivors to your cause. Builders can reclaim and fortify a place faster than other units. Scavengers will bring back more food than the others.

Scientists are not good for much except research. Once you find a laboratory, assign them to available researches.

Defending the fort is everybody’s job and you might need every man available to defend against a sudden attack.

Gameplay:

There’s not much gathering or building to do. You will mostly be exploring, killing zombies, recruiting survivors and defending your fort. There isn’t much of a storyline to the game. You won’t have special events to work through. The results of each day’s work are reported through various journals. If people are unhappy, you will get to know about it through the journal entries. These entries will come up as notifications.

The in game tutorial is pretty thorough and does not miss out on anything. Additionally, there are descriptions and tips throughout the game to guide you through the decisions that you will have to make.

There are some stats to keep an eye on. Happiness rating needs to be kept about 30% in order to prevent crimes, riots, strikes, etc. Food numbers need to be balanced with the intake so that no one starves to death. Housing numbers and danger to fort rating are not visible immediately. They can be seen by hovering over the city name and the survivor icon respectively.

Artwork & Design:

Artwork is quite basic and has lots of blood to keep with the theme. The music is eerie and tense to suit the mood. There’s an option to turn harsh language on and off. If you want your units to use swear words in their journals, you can turn it on.

Overall, Rebuild is an average strategy game that has all the basic elements but lacks the finesse of a well-developed game. It is still quite playable and has some interesting features to keep you hooked.

Sonny is a combat-strategy game with RPG elements. You have a character that levels up through battles. There are items to be collected and used and allies to be won and used strategically. The game has a long life span and it can sometimes feel like you’re making slow progress. When the game starts, it drops you right in the middle of a ship full of zombies. There’s a friend who helps you for a while. He acts mainly as a guide and teacher for basic combat and strategy within the game.

The guided start is helpful. It allows you to get started quickly and get right in to the thick of it.

Graphics
The game has simple 2D graphics with item-specific character detailing. The character appearance changes when you change the equipment. Other than that, everything else is pretty basic. Which makes for great FPS rates. On a 2010 MacBook Pro 15” it flickered between 30 and 38.

Combat:

Combat style is turn-by-turn, much like many other online flash-based RPG/Strategy games. The view is from the side and is like most other combat games like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, etc. Fighting involves various ‘skills’ that you gather as you level up. Some classes seem to have a secondary weapon in addition to their primary. I am using the ‘Destroyer’ class and at stage 34 I am yet to find a usable side arm for my class.

Items:

The item drop rate in Sonny is pretty satisfying but not to the point of being too easy. In training mode, you will get items very frequently, almost every time. These are good for selling for buying better gear. There are no special items as such. No healing or strength/mana restoring potions. Items are restricted to things you can wear and use as a weapon.

The shop in every zone stays the same. The best items seem to be dropped and cannot be bought. And since this is not an MMO, there’s no in game economy either. However, the shop is great for selling dropped items you don’t need for money. This money comes in handy for using in the next zone where initially you might need to upgrade.

Skills:

There’s a rich set of skills to choose from. They range from defensive and offensive buffs, special attacks and magical attacks. Each skill has a ‘cool down’ time counted in turns. This adds to the necessity of strategizing when using them. Some skills can have multiple instances on the ‘action bar’ and so you can use them more than once during combat. Most special skills would use your ‘Focus Points’, which is somewhat equivalent to the mana points in other games. There are only 8 skill slots making it important to choose your in-battle skills carefully before each battle as you start collecting more than 8 skills points. Also, it is important to have the ‘Quick Strike’ skill handy because it costs nothing and can be used when other skills are out of turn. Choosing the right skills can actually help you progress through the game.

Leveling Up:

… is quite fast till about level 12-13 depending on how you are playing it. From then on it becomes slower. One good thing is that you can ‘re-spec’ whenever you want up to five times a day. This means a total reset of all your abilities. This single feature will make this game much more interesting for most people. It allows you to rethink your strategies and explore newer skill combinations.

Teammates:

You have teammates in this game who fight alongside you. They are meant to compliment your fighting style and need to be placed strategically to be most effective. Multiple teammates will call for better strategizing.

Training:

Other than helping you level up, training also helps you level up your teammate. Not only will it help you clear levels more easily, it also gives you more time to engage with the game without having to progress through the storyline. It also enables you to understand what kind of enemies you will be facing within that zone. You get to know their attacks and weak points. Also, if your teammate gets killed in training you won’t lose him. Training is also a great way to amass money quickly and save it up for upgrading items. So far the best items seem to the ones that are dropped during training or actual battles.

Storyline:

Not much of a storyline here; just a lost man hacking away through a very mixed genre of opponents. There’s an element of comic relief every now and then, which is nice. Sonny is a man without any memory who escapes from a ship full of zombies. Then gets attacked by ghosts of samurai past and tribal shamans later.

Sonny is overall a good game for casual online gamers. It’s not meant for gamers use to more traditional RPG’s with complex plots. This is a simple Combat-Strategy/RPG game that you can get in to quickly and then keep playing over a long period of time without risking forgetting how to play.
